Overview

Ready to shape the future of science and global health? A leading nonprofit biological resources and standards organization, ATCC, is seeking a Supervisor, Lab Operations to work onsite in Manassas, VA.

The Supervisor, Laboratory Operations will supervise four groups that function as a central services team supporting commercial and federal solutions manufacturing labs. This position coordinates and directs daily activities and demonstrates technical expertise.  This role will oversee 4 groups: Media, Labeling, Kitting, and Glassware, with a total of 11 direct reports. These direct reports make up a central services team that supports ATCC production labs in the following areas:

  • Media - Ensure consistent quality media using organic materials and chemicals in various formulations to help biological growth of ATCC products
  • Labeling - Orientation and proofing of label copy and printing labels to be applied to vials
  • Kitting - Organization of components into final packaging 
  • Glassware - Sterilization of equipment and waste management

Our ideal candidate will have a background in Chemistry, Biology, or a related science field, with experience in media, and prior experience with direct reports, as this role will supervise 11 hourly staff supporting multiple manufacturing labs. This role requires prior supervisory and manufacturing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Scheduling of Staff: Direct, coordinate and schedule the daily activities of the laboratory staff, ensuring efficiency and adherence to quality and safety standards.
  • Central Services Leadership: Provide support to multiple manufacturing labs by overseeing the central services unit responsible for kitting, labeling, glassware, and media.
  • Safety Management: Regularly review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) to ensure compliance with best practices and the latest safety requirements as advised by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).  Ensure the central services team adheres to all safety protocols and maintains a safe working environment.

  • Personnel Development: Develop cross training programs for staff and promote performance awareness through regular communication and appraisals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years' experience.
  • A background in Chemistry, Biology or related science with an experience in media formulation and preparation preferred. 
  • Previous experience supervising, leading and coordinating laboratory staff. 
  • Strong organizational and project management skills. 
  • In-depth knowledge of QA requirements, regulatory standards, safety, and protocols in a laboratory setting. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and evolving laboratory needs. 
  • Computer proficiency, Excel, SharePoint and ERP experience highly preferred. 
  • LEAN experience preferred. 
  • Experience with aseptic technique. 

Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is $105,000 to $115,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for additional incentive compensation including regular merit increases and the corporate bonus program.
