Overview

The Senior Manager, Standards Development is responsible for leading a cross-functional program that sustains ATCC’s mission-critical priorities of quality biological and published laboratory, research, and translational standards. The Senior Manager, Standards Development, will develop, coordinate, manage, and execute plans related to existing standards products as well as establish a portfolio of new standards-related products. The Senior Manager will work with R&D, Content, Marketing, Operations, and other teams to impact the ATCC Certified Reference Materials program and biological standards. The incumbent will also work cross-functionally with subject matter experts at ATCC and externally as the Director of the ATCC Standards Development Organization, leading the development of accredited industry consensus standards. The Senior Manager, Standards Development will seek out, develop, and maintain a robust network of academic, government, and industry leaders to support the standards landscape that impacts ATCC’s scope of business across life sciences and other industries. The will serve as an internal thought leader and will influence the company in standards and standardization. The incumbent will be responsible for managing, motivating, developing, evaluating, and mentoring a team of standards managers on assigned projects in alignment with ATCC performance management practices and for actively supporting, complying with, and enforcing all ATCC corporate policies and procedures.    

 

The candidate for this role must work and think independently; duties of this position are to be completed under general administrative guidance.  Decision-making is a key component of this position, and the outcome of their decisions will have a significant impact on the overall success of the organization.  Functions are to be completed in a timely manner with acceptable quality.  Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food science, or other life science related standard reference products, including chemicals, bioinformatics, and diagnostic devices highly preferred.

 

This is a hybrid role based in either Manassas, VA or Gaithersburg, MD. 

Responsibilities

  1. Builds and executes a cross-functional program that evaluates, develops, and manages the ATCC Certified Reference Materials portfolio and other standards related products and services.
  2. Leads the ATCC American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, accredited standards developing organization that serves to convene private and public sector experts and stakeholders to develop collaborative standards.
  3. Develops and executes programs to foster awareness and convert stakeholder interest into action, contribution, and participation in standards.
  4. Identifies public and private market opportunities and develop plans to impact the standards-related market.
  5. Ideates and realizes new or improved programs that incorporates innovations and efficiencies that grow the ATCC quality standards mission.
  6. Serves as the ATCC subject matter expert in the development of biological material standards, genomic standards, and controls that can be utilized by customers to ensure authenticity and reliability in the life science industry.
  7. Coordinates internal subject matter experts in active participation and monitoring of ongoing standards development at U.S. and international industry, academic, and government standards bodies.
  8. Functions as a standards leader internally and externally at research conferences and other events.
  9. Develops roadmaps of emerging technology application areas for standardization readiness and impact. 
  10. Demonstrates leadership and sound judgement in recruiting, managing, mentoring and motivating staff and other resources to achieve goals. 
  11. Serves as an interface between ATCC and external entities for standards. This may include collaborations, strategic partnerships, and consortium-based relationships. 
  12. Partners and works effectively cross-functionally to ensure appropriate standards policy understanding, adoption, and execution across the company.  
  13. Communicates pertinent corporate and functional information to their team and ensures high quality project management and adherence to ANSI and other applicable rules.
  14. Communicates issues to management appropriately and in a timely manner to ensure timelines, budget and goals are consistently met.
  15. Develops, implements, and manages budget and workforce plans to ensure achievement of annual program and budget goals and objectives and maintenance of quality levels.
  16. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations’ policies and applicable laws.  Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decision to include selection, training, performance evaluations, counseling, promotions and terminations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor's degree and 10 or more years' experience, including 4 or more years' supervisory experience or equivalent experience.
  • Graduate degree in science, business, or related field preferred.
  • Previous professional experience as a Senior Manager, Manager, or other leadership position in 1) an accredited standards development organization; or 2) in industry biomanufacturing; or 3) in an industry, university, or federal biotechnology, biomedical, or biopharma innovation center focused on translational research and development; or 4) a membership organization with a standards development program.
  • Familiarity in material standards products, research standards, and translational standards (i.e. production/process standards)
  • Project management experience in industry, academia, or government.
  • Preferred experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food science, or other life science related standard reference products, including chemicals, bioinformatics, and diagnostic devices.
  • Demonstrated success in building intra- and inter-organizational partnerships with a large range of stakeholders from industry, academic, government, and non-government organizations; collaboration and consensus-building; and achievement of strategic objectives.
  • At least five (5) years of management experience. Experience in a matrixed organization is preferred.
