Overview

This Technical Manager will oversee and supervise staff managing the production of viral and bacterial biomaterials and assist with special projects for ATCC and ATCC Federal Solutions in Manassas, VA.   Ideal experience includes In-vitro cell culture experience.  BSL-3 or Federal Select Agent Program experience preferred but not required.  This Technical Manager must have undergraduate degree and at least 7 years of experience with 2+ years of supervising personnel, ideally in lab environment.  Background in virology, molecular biology, cell biology or laboratory management experience is ideal. 

 

The Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing and directing the activities of a scientific group. They coordinate the production and transfer of organisms and related products. The Technical Manager may identify, audit, and select contractors and then oversee, manage, and report their work to produce reagents, organisms, and services to support contract research and development.

 

The Technical Manager manages the costs, methods, and staffing within the applied contract and makes decisions within organizational policy on how best to utilize resources to achieve goals. They make recommended changes to policy and procedure, when appropriate, and work on issues of diverse scope where analysis of situation or data requires evaluation of a variety of factors, including an understanding of current business trends.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

  1. Oversee and direct the activities of a scientific group in the research and/or development of the organization’s products, projects, and/or programs.
  2. Collaborate on establishing project parameters and product specifications for materials produced through outside contracts.
  3. Review and recommend changes to technology and production standard operating procedures. Ensure appropriate documentation of the production, storage, and distribution of contract-related organisms and related products.
  4. Manage the cost effectiveness of the functional area to include external contract management, supplies, time charging, and resources. Determine how to use resources to meet schedules and goals.  Participate in the annual budget process to provide input on capital expenditures and labor.
  5. Work closely with other departments to ensure proper transfer of materials both internally and externally. Ensure all safety protocols are followed and equipment is properly maintained and supplied.
  6. Communicate cross-functional progress, updates, and challenges to Senior Management, integrated project staff and customers. Generate reports and monitor stocks inventory in ERP system.
  7. Conduct and collaborate with others on basic research and development relevant to long-term objectives and concerns.
  8. Develop strategies and goals to ensure the effective achievement of scientific objectives and timely delivery of products and documentation to internal and external customers.
  9. Monitor and evaluate completion of tasks and projects. Make final decisions on administrative or operational matters.
  10. Manage the activities of supervisors and individual contributors. Monitor performance, development, and staffing of department incumbents within organizational policy. 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree and 7 or more years' experience, including 2 or more years' supervisory experience or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in high containment (BSL-3) is desirable.
