    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge.

    The Director, Corporate Business Development is responsible for planning and executing ATCC's corporate business development activities, including business analysis & strategic planning, partnering, M&A and building strategic business relationships. The Director organizes and manages an internal business review mechanism to assess both organic and inorganic new business opportunities, working with PPM in portfolio & project analysis and review. Both independently and with the CBO/VP drives inorganic opportunities from lead generation, analysis, review and diligence though to transaction. Assists in deal/M&A integration and alliance management as needed. The incumbent also provides support and assistance to the Licensing team on complex deals, as needed. Supervises enterprise Market Intelligence program and other staff as assigned. The incumbent actively supports and complies with all ATCC corporate and program policies and procedures.


    This position must work and think independently; duties of this position are to be completed under minimal guidance. Discretion in handling assigned responsibilities, including the ability to resolve problems and exercise good judgment while maintaining confidentiality.  Functions are to be completed in a timely manner with acceptable quality.


    1. Plans and facilitates corporate-level ATCC business development activities. Leads the internal business analysis to drive decisions including forecasting, valuation, risk analysis and market/competitive landscaping, strategy and positioning.
    2. Supports the PPM and pipeline review by performing relevant business analysis and input.
    3. Identifies new business, technology, strategic partnership and M&A opportunities for ATCC through engagement with external partners and collaborators.
    4. Creates and manages an external network and business development pipeline.
    5. Coordinates external vendor, consultant and advisor input and projects as needed.
    6. Both independently and in collaboration with the VP and legal counsel, negotiates terms and contracts with third parties. Works effectively with other commercial and scientific staff to perform due diligence on prospective business opportunities.
    7. Studies the market and emerging trends to build ATCC's understanding of the technological and competitive landscape toward more informed strategy development and business development decision making. Provides support, through the team, for internal and external market intelligence and research activities.
    8. Works collaboratively with other executives and programs to develop and implement plans to grow ATCC's business, ensure compliance with ATCC's contractual obligations, and to serve the organization's mission and goals.
    9. Demonstrates   familiarity with   software   applications and competency   in navigating   required databases.
    10. Supports the licensing team and other enterprise transactional and strategic business needs.


    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of professional experience; minimum of eight (8) years management responsibility.
    • Life science industry experience preferably in tools and services must include a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a business development, licensing, strategy, or technology transfer function in a biopharmaceutical, academic, or non-profit setting.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

    • Deep knowledge of the modern biotechnology landscape, especially at the interface of technology and business activity.
    • A strong mix of scientific, financial and business analysis proficiencies are required. Can demonstrate expertise in financial capabilities including valuation, forecasting and deal analytics.
    • Demonstrated strategic thinking, business instincts, and creativity.
    • Strong business acumen and understanding of commercial and business development deal flow activities from sourcing to closing.
    • Knowledge of contracts and compliance activities; strong negotiation skills are required, accompanied by effective interpersonal, consensus building, and influencing skills.
    • Self-starter, motivated and takes initiative; strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; able to work collaboratively with all levels of staff to resolve problems and external partners to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving and results.
    • Resourceful, diplomatic and professional; deliver outstanding customer service while managing relationships; a can-do attitude and work style that supports teamwork and lead teams when necessary.
    • Adaptable; be able to shift priorities and focus as departmental and/or business demands change; handle multiple tasks in a timely and orderly fashion.
    • Strong analytical/organizational skills, planning and prioritization skills and attention to detail, especially in respect to correspondence and in reviewing legal documents; be flexible to work in a complex, fast-moving environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including excellent listening skills and presentation skills to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.
    • Provide a high level of accuracy; exercise sound judgment and strong project management skills.
    • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team; build and maintain relationships (internal and external) and influence without authority.
    • Seek, learn, and apply new skills/knowledge to perform job responsibilities.
    • Position-relevant computer experience including Microsoft Office and procurement systems software, especially in PowerPoint and Excel.
    • Follow all company safety practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and policies.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • MBA and/or advanced degree in a life science field.
    • Prior experience in multiple functions within the life science industry is desirable, including the tools and services sector
