    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge.

    The Director, R&D directly supports the VP/GM, ACS in the development, coordination, execution and management of the cell biology product development business unit of ATCC. This includes development and refinement of strategy based on market knowledge, intellectual property and internal capabilities.  The incumbent is also accountable for identification of new areas for cell biology product development.  The Director, R&D has overall responsibility for delivering the product development pipeline to specifications, on time and on budget so that business unit and corporate revenue goals are met, as well as develops and is accountable for the R&D expense budget.  In addition, this position will seek out and foster external scientific and business relationships that will further business unit goals.  Role collaborates cross-functionally with business and operational units within both ACS and ATCC to deliver strategic and operational objectives.  Responsible for hiring, developing, mentoring and managing R&D staff and for actively supporting, complying with and enforcing all ATCC corporate policies and procedures.  


    This position must work and think independently; duties of this position are to be completed under minimal to no guidance. Decision making is a key component of this position, and decisions have a significant impact on the overall success of the Organization. Discretion in handling assigned responsibilities, including the ability to resolve problems and exercise good judgment while maintaining confidentiality.  Functions are to be completed in a timely manner with acceptable quality.


    1. Develops, plans, and executes R&D strategies that will enable ACS/ATCC to deliver against the Corporate Goals.  
    2. Actively identifies and pursues new areas for cell biology product and technology development utilizing organic and inorganic means.    
    3. Demonstrates leadership and sound judgement in recruiting, managing, and motivating staff and other resources to ensure that approved R&D projects are efficiently executed and are delivered on time.    
    4. Serves as the primary interface between the business unit and the legal/licensing team on issues such as freedom to operate, patentability and in-licensed technologies.  
    5. Monitors relevant markets and external technologies and develops plans on how to best apply these to further ACS goals. This may include identification and evaluation of partnering or M&A opportunities.     
    6. Communicates pertinent corporate and business unit information to their team and ensures high quality, rigorous scientific and safety standards are upheld. 
    7. Communicates issues to management appropriately and in a timely manner to ensure timelines, budget and goals are consistently met.
    8. Develops and implements workforce plans to ensure achievement of annual program and budget goals and objectives and maintenance of quality levels including ISO 9001.  
    9. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations’ policies and applicable laws. Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decision to include selection, training, performance evaluations, counseling, promotions and terminations. 
    10. Embraces the ATCC Mission, directives and business unit and corporate goals.



    Education and Experience:

    • Doctoral degree, or equivalent, in cell/molecular biology life science discipline is required.
    • A minimum of 15 years of lab related experience including at least 5 years of industry experience in product development is required with a demonstrated history of increasing responsibilities and accountability.  Additional years of industry experience are highly preferred.
    • First-hand experience participating in and managing full cycle product development programs in a related industry.
    • A minimum of five years’ demonstrated experience in people management including direct and team management is required.
    • Relevant skills in understanding biotechnology patent law as it applies to product development.
    • Familiarity with product development processes including technology transfer to operations.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

    • Knowledge of business financials including P&L statements and departmental budgets.
    • Proven ability to effectively manage up and down
    • Solid personnel management, coaching, delegating and evaluation skills.
    • Must be able to travel occasionally on business domestically and internationally, sometimes on short notice.
    • Self-starter, motivated and takes initiative; strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; able to work collaboratively with all levels of staff to resolve problems and external partners to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving and results.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including excellent listening skills and presentation skills to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.
    • Position-relevant computer experience including Microsoft Office.
    • Follow all company safety practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and policies.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in an ISO accredited and matrixed organization is preferred.
    • Familiarity with an ERP system.
