    The Repository Operations Technician will perform assigned activities within the repository service operation. This position is responsible for the receipt, inventory, storage, withdraw, and shipping of biological specimens, samples, and materials, stored at temperatures ranging from ambient to -196°C, and having potentially hazardous properties from multiple commercial and government clients. This position uses database applications and standard precautionary procedures to work independently, be self-directed, communicate effectively, and make sound decisions.  Work is performed following standard operating procedures and is routinely reviewed by the supervisor for accuracy and adherence to standards. This position requires some complexity and working knowledge of technical, operative or administrative methods and practices found within the biological repository industry.

    Responsibilities

    1. Follows all company policies governing operation of the Repository Area.
    2. Performs all duties according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Facility Safety Guidelines, and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requirements to includes compliance of cGMP CFR 21 parts 210 and 211 where applicable.
    3. Participates in the creation of employee training, attendance and competency records.
    4. Assists management in completion of reports for customer complaints, process deviations, incidents, and accidents in a timely manner.
    5. May be required to travel to other facilities to meet business needs.
    6. Prepares samples for pickups, courier deliveries, and shipments.
    7. Participates in temperature/liquid nitrogen (LN2) level monitoring.
    8. Participates in afterhours emergency response rotations.
    9. Documents alarms in response to the temperature monitoring system.
    10. Uses personal protective equipment, adhere to safety protocols, and follow standard operating procedures (SOP).
    11. Works closely with supervisors in order to support customer inquiries, such as discrepancies in shipments, inventory maintenance, and database updates.
    12. Responsible for using an ERP system for data management.
    13. Performs data entry of samples into a computerized database for sample tracking and management.
    14. Assists in training of peers, according to SOPs, in the effective use of equipment, methods of storage and retrieval, and systematic data entry.
    15. Contributes to development of standard operating procedures for repository processes.
    16. Participates in process improvement activities.
    17. Performs internal specimen consolidation and reorganization projects.
    18. Verifies material prior to shipment and confirms accuracy of data entry records for incoming materials.
    19. Performs the consolidation and cleaning of freezers and tanks located in the repository.
    20. Performs functions following standard operating procedures in the effective use of equipment, methods of storage and retrieval, serum separation, aliquoting, general laboratory procedures and systematic data entry.
    21. May perform supervised work in the laboratory for basic repository specimen preparation and processing such as nucleic acid extraction, blood fractionation, cell immortalization, and basic aliquoting.
    22. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or GED
    •  1-4 years experience with data entry, shipping/receiving, and/or sample management. Previous laboratory experience is highly desirable.  
    • Experience working with a company wide enterprise based system (ERP/MRP) is highly desirable.   

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Working competence with PCs including MS/Windows, MS/Excel, MS/Word and an ability to learn other MS/Windows based applications.
    • APICS Certification a plus.
    • Knowledge of methods to handle, process, and store biological specimens using a computerized storage and retrieval system.
    • Knowledge of Universal Precautions, general laboratory and quality control/assurance procedures.
    • Must be able to communicate well in English, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to complete work under tight deadlines and have strong organizational skills
    • Working with temperature sensitive materials.
