    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge. 

    The Lead Biologist performs a variety of complex laboratory procedures requiring accuracy, judgment and technical proficiency.  The incumbent performs a lead role in the core sequencing laboratory at ATCC. The successful candidate will have a strong background in genomics and operation of Next-Generation sequencers in a high-throughput mode to achieve program goals. The Lead Biologist will be considered a subject matter expert within the program and will be expected to provide appropriate training to staff.   The Lead Biologist may assist in management of the program by oversee the work of other staff, attending meetings, assisting with budgeting, marketing forecasts, and formulating goals.    The incumbent complies with all ATCC corporate policies and procedures. 


    1. Adheres to appropriate quality guidelines.

    2. Follows relevant SOPs and WIs  with no supervision

    3. Receives and completes production  work orders as scheduled

    4. Communicates effectively with supervisor and others as appropriate on work status

    5. Performs DNA extraction, sequencing, and QC on ATCC biological materials.

    6. Demonstrates competence in sequencing and analysis of a range of biological materials with no supervision.

    7. Maintains knowledge and complies with corporate and program policies and procedures.

    8. Actively acquires new lab skills and specialized knowledge.

    9. Reads and understands relevant scientific literature.

    10. Compiles and documents data, as directed, for technical presentation.

    11. Utilizes advance computer skills. (i.e., expertise in the appropriate fields of ATCC’s ERP system)

    12. Offers suggestions for and contributes to optimization of processes.

    13. Assumes a lead role in training staff in laboratory and departmental procedures.

    14. When appropriate, participates in scientific meetings, seminars, and workshops to stay abreast of technology advances.

    15. Communicates effectively with members of all programs at ATCC as well as with outside collaborators.

    16. Develops protocols to implement special tests relevant to program specialty.

    17. Interacts with scientific community to answer inquiries and assist with technical problems, as needed.

    18. Provides training for CSRs and TSRs, as requested.

    19. Develops and evaluates new and/or existing assays for characterization/authentication of biological materials.

    20. Troubleshoots out-of-specification results, analyzes data and oversees process changes.

    21. Conducts research projects with minimal supervision from scientists, as directed.

    22. Takes a leadership role in ensuring SOPs and departmental procedures are current and up-to-date.

    23. Can represent ATCC as a sole participant in scientific meetings/trade shows.

    24. May provide leadership in technology transfer to other ATCC programs.

    25. Assists in formulating program goals.

    26. Participates in managerial meetings, as needed.

    27. Interacts closely with supervisor for management of program including assistance in development of area budget, as requested.

    28. May oversee the work of others and maintain accountability for their work.

    29. Writes and submits proposals for process development/optimization projects, carries out approved proposals under direction of supervisor, as appropriate.

    30. Assumes a lead role in achieving program goals.

    31. Can serve as coordinator and leader on a cross-functional project teams.

    32. Performs other ancillary duties as assigned.


    Education and Experience:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in a science related discipline plus 7+ years of relevant work experience is required or a science related Master’s degree and 5+ years of relevant work experience are required.

    • Demonstrated experience in sequencing various biological materials such as bacteria, viruses and fungi etc on short-read and long-read sequencing platforms.

    • Expert knowledge of various bioinformatics tools for analysis of sequencing data. Experience working with cross-functional product development teams is desirable as is experience in external collaborations.

    • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Advance skills including expertise in running short-read and long-read sequencing instruments

    • Serves as a technical lead for sequencing core lab

    • Ability to work independently

    • Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding environment

    • Ability to lead others in the attainment of program goals and objectives

    • Maintains accurate records

    • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be a proponent of continuous improvement.

    • Experience in complex lab skills and safety procedures including proper handling of chemicals and/or biologicals
