    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge. 




    The Senior Scientist will be responsible for management of the HIV/AIDS program at ATCC. The incumbent will interact with key cross-functional individuals to execute projects. The successful candidate will have a strong background in HIV and will be expected to implement emerging scientific technologies to continually improve program objectives, execute ideas and concepts for creating new products and research tools. The incumbent must have proven track record of publications in peer reviewed journals in the field of HIV/AIDS. The ideal candidate will have a broad expertise in classical and molecular virology.  The Senior Scientist will also be expected to contribute within their own group as well as cross-functionally towards the overall goals and objectives of ATCC.  The incumbent is expected to supervise and mentor staff, leading by example, and enforce all ATCC corporate policies and procedures. The incumbent may perform research and write grant, contract and patent applications with program approval.

    Responsibilities

    Operation



    1. Proactively monitors and replenishes existing biomaterial inventories

    2. Coordinates biomaterial group activities with Manufacturing Support and BioProduction to support the objectives of the ATCC, if applicable

    3. Characterizes, authenticates and preserves newly accessioned biomaterial items

    4. Maintains and supports ATCC’s world-class reputation

    5. Develops processes and procedures to ensure efficient, cost-effective processing of a high-quality biomaterial and reagents

    6. With supervisor, monitors and adheres to the Collection budget


     


    Research & Development



    1. Develops new and/or improved authentication and validation methods

    2. Develops new biomaterial groups and systems, as applicable, consistent with the objectives of the ATCC

    3. Responsible for providing leadership and managing a specified biomaterial group and/or R&D team. Management of the collection includes characterization, authentication, preservation, maintenance and distribution of cell lines, microorganisms, or reagents procured by the incumbent or other individuals within the ATCC.

    4. Designs, builds and directs internal and external research activities and collaborations, as applicable

    5. Interacts with other corporate programs to foster a productive research environment


     


    Supervisory Responsibilities, if applicable



    1. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws

    2. Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluation, counseling, promotion and termination

    3. Participates in or conducts regular staff meetings to communicate pertinent corporate and program information

    4. Fosters a positive work environment

    5. Leads by example

    6. Ensures staff complies with all safety requirements


     


    Scientific, Customer and other external interactions



    1. Provides scientific expertise to internal and external customers as applicable

    2. Manages interactions with depositors and advisors as needed/assigned

    3. Manages research collaborations with internal and external groups

    4. Participates in professional activities both internal and external to ATCC

    5. Maintains memberships in appropriate scientific societies

    6. Submits data for publication and/or patent protection when applicable

    7. Keeps abreast of current, relevant literature and technologies


     Leadership



    1. May serve as a Principal Investigator on a grant/contract application or administration

    2. Demonstrates strategic view of assignments relating to growth of area/collection, use of resources and appropriate staffing.

    3. Demonstrates knowledge in resource planning and project management.

    4. Provides ideas in scientific area that meets or enhances ATCC mission and/or goals.

    5. May be responsible for a highly specialized scientific function or several related scientific projects.

    6. Performs other ancillary duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:



    • Doctoral degree in biological science, with a strong background in HIV is a must have with 5-8 years of experience in virology and infectious disease.

    • Previous supervisory experience using a performance management system is desired.

    • Experience with modern sequencing methods and viral genome characterization is desirable.

    • Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

    • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be a proponent of continuous improvement.

    • Demonstrated track record of scientific accomplishments, i.e., publications, presentations

    • Works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
