    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge. 

    The Supervisor is responsible for the supervision group of individuals or a specialty area within a program and to ensure departmental goals and objectives are met. The incumbent is responsible for the training and supervision of a minimum of three full-time biologists and/or lab assistants.  The Supervisor demonstrates expertise in scientific and technical aspects as well as the development of methodologies including those of a special nature relating to program assignment. Interacts with external individuals, as needed.  The incumbent actively supports, complies with and enforces all ATCC corporate and program policies and procedures.


    1. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations’ policies and applicable laws.
    2. Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluations, counseling, promotions and terminations.
    3. Represents department at meetings, as needed.
    4. Attends and leads staff and project team meetings, as needed.
    5. Attends and participates in scientific meetings to keep abreast of state of the art technology.
    6. Ensures departmental compliance with appropriate QA requirements.
    7. Develops and maintains cross-training program, as appropriate.
    8. Creates, develops and implements SOPs, work instructions, departmental policies and protocols, as needed.
    9. Ensures attainment of planned production and/or departmental goals.
    10. Ensures labor feedback and inventory transactions are correctly done on time.
    11. Updates documentation, as appropriate.
    12. Ensures all paperwork and records are accurate and completed in a timely manner, including data entry into QAD and other databases.
    13. Ensures that employees are aware of their performance levels through regular communication as well as through providing timely formal appraisals.
    14. Interacts with internal and external customers to answer relevant inquires and resolve problems, as needed.
    15. Involves the staff in developing improvements including safety, cost control, and/or increased efficiency.
    16. May be requested to serve as a back up to the Director in his/her absence.
    17. May perform laboratory duties which are of a complex and difficult nature, as required.
    18. Works with appropriate staff to manage laboratories/collections/product lines or sub-units within a department/program.
    19. Reviews batch records and/or appropriate internal/external documentation to ensure accuracy. Approves and/or processes batch record to the appropriate party to approve.
    20. Other duties as assigned.



    Education and Experience:

    • A bachelor’s degree in a biological science or engineering field is required.  
    • Five to seven years of relevant professional work experience including a minimum of one years of lead or supervisory experience is required.  OR
    • A master’s degree in a biological science field
    • 4+ years of relevant work experience including a minimum of 1 year of lead or supervisor experience is required,
    • Is responsible for managing a sub-function of a department via a small group of specialists and/or technicians.

     Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Experience with cell biology, adherent and suspension cell lines.
    • Previous supervisory experience/capability demonstrated.
    • Requires minimal supervision.
    • Familiar with routine and specialized techniques/equipment.
    • Demonstrates ability to assist in evaluation of transferred new methodologies.
    • Ability to evaluate and record complex data.
    • Scientific expertise in assigned discipline.
    • Ability to recognize and troubleshoot testing, processes or products failing to meet specifications.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform administrative tasks associated with lab and/or program management in accordance with applicable regulatory agencies.
    • Ability to prioritize, organize and schedule production activities and complex projects.
    • Demonstrates leadership qualities and ability to function in a team environment.
