    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge. 


    The lead bioinformatician is responsible for providing technical and strategic leadership to the cross-functional project teams of data scientists and bioinformaticians and is responsible for providing data management solutions, computations analysis and development of software pipelines to analyze bioinformatics data. The incumbent complies with all ATCC corporate policies and procedures.

    Responsibilities

    1. Provides technical and strategic leadership in development of bioinformatics tools and pipelines to perform complex analyses
    2. Develops and manages bioinformatics data and processes at ATCC.
    3. Collaborate with scientists to define and implement algorithms and pipelines that ensure robust and reproducible analyses
    4. Ensures that programs are executed with full scientific rigor to deliver robust products and processes
    5. Play a leading role analyzing results and designing experiments and new bioinformatics approaches required by the work or specific projects assigned
    6. Designs data management solutions, including storage of datasets and work products that optimize data-sharing and regulatory compliance
    7. Stays current on new developments in bioinformatics, monitors key market competitors, and develops and champions strategies to address observed opportunities and threats
    8. Manages activities efficiently and effectively to meet program timelines and performance requirements, prioritize activities to align with strategic goals
    9. Manage, plan, budget computing resources and infrastructure
    10. Manages multiple, complex application projects and/or project teams.
    11. Guide, mentor and advise team of independent scientists and bioinformatician,
    12. Supervises and fosters development of scientific, business and leadership skills in direct reports.
    13. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluations, counseling, promotions and terminations.
    14. Develops training materials and train ATCC staff
    15. Interacts with vendors and consultants for implementation and upgrade of systems.
    16. Anticipates technical risks and develop mitigation strategies
    17. Contributes to technical publications and grant/contract proposals
    18. Perform other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, Genomic Sciences, Molecular Biology, or Genetics field plus 7+ years or relevant experience or a Master’s degree plus 5+ years of relevant experience or a PhD degree plus 1+ years of relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated excellence in implementing algorithms, genomic pipelines, and managing data in cloud-based computing environments and high-performance clusters.
    • Proficient with publicly available bioinformatics databases, tools, algorithms.
    • Experience managing & budgeting computing resources
    • Knowledge of relational databases and SQL language
    • Skills in programming languages such as Perl, PHP or Python, and R and in web application development
    • Proficient in the Linux operating system and basic shell script programming

    • Ability to provide guidance to bioinformatics staff on a daily basis
    • Excellent networking skills within the research community both internally and externally
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills. 

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Knowledge of NGS data processing
    • Previous supervisory experience/capability demonstrated
    • Ability to identify promising new technologies and emerging market needs
    • Sound business judgment in evaluating and relating new opportunities to the needs of the business
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Strong project planning skills
