    Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge.  

    The Scientist will be responsible for leading research and product development in the area of microbial genomics at ATCC. The successful candidate will have a strong background in bacterial genomics and will be using current microbiome knowledge to develop ideas and concepts for creating new tools and standards for the research community. The responsibilities include developing a plan of action and then independently designing and executing experiments related to microbiome research and metagenomics analysis of various microbial populations from different sources. The ideal candidate will have a deep expertise in molecular biology and next generation sequencing with a proven track record of product development in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment. The incumbent will be integral part of the cross-functional product development teams and will interact with key individuals in marketing, operations, quality and external collaborators to develop product specifications and then execute the projects.  The individual will be responsible for identifying required resources, develop project schedules and milestones, tracking budgets and other resources to ensure they are being used appropriately and efficiently, and for providing progress reports onto the executive leadership team. The Scientist may be responsible for other R&D activities including development of new and/or improved characterization and validation methods for microbiology/molecular biology products and other projects consistent with the goals and objectives of ATCC. It is expected the incumbent supervises and mentors the staff, while leading by example, and enforces all ATCC corporate policies and procedures.


    Research & Development

    1. Develops new and/or improved authentication and validation methods.
    2. Develops new biomaterial and reagent groups and systems, as applicable, consistent with the objectives of the ATCC.
    3. Responsible for providing leadership and managing a specified biomaterial group and/or R&D team. Management of the biomaterial group includes characterization, authentication, preservation, maintenance and distribution of cell lines, microorganisms, or reagents procured by the incumbent or other individuals within the ATCC.
    4. May design, build and direct internal and external research activities and collaborations, as applicable.
    5. Interacts with other corporate programs, to foster a productive research environment. 

    Supervisory Responsibilities, if applicable

    1. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
    2. Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluation, counseling, promotion and termination.
    3. Participates in or conducts regular staff meetings to communicate pertinent corporate and program information.
    4. Fosters a positive work environment.
    5. Leads by example.
    6. Ensures staff complies with all safety requirements. 

    Scientific, Customer and other external interactions

    1. Provides scientific expertise to internal and external customers as applicable.
    2. Manages interactions with depositors and advisor's as needed/assigned.
    3. Manages research collaborations with internal and external groups.
    4. Participates in professional activities both internal and external to ATCC.
    5. Maintains memberships in appropriate scientific societies.
    6. Submits data for publication and/or patent protection when applicable.
    7. Keeps abreast of current, relevant literature and technologies.
    8. Performs other duties as assigned. 


    Education and Experience:

    • Doctoral degree in a life science field and 2-5 years of relevant experience in the study of of microbial genomics and/or microbiome research OR
    • Mater's degree in a life science field and 10-13 years of relevant experience in the study of of microbial genomics and/or microbiome research OR
    • Bachelor's degree in a life science field and 12-15 years of relevant experience in the study of of microbial genomics and/or microbiome research.
    • Experience in the biotech industry highly desirable. 
    • Previous publication or presentations of relevant scientific information required. Must have demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought. 

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

    • Proven track record of independent research in the field of microbial genomics with relevant publications or presentation is required.
    • Experience working with cross-functional product development teams is desirable as is experience in external collaborations.
    • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.  Reputation as emerging leader in relevant scientific field with sustained performance and accomplishments. 
    • Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding environment. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be a proponent of continuous improvement.
    • Strong verbal and written skills.

    • Current laboratory experience in relevant scientific area.
    • Knowledge of the business side of science i.e. cost of acquisitions, return on investments, development of new products, processes, technologies.
    • Knowledgeable/experienced with innovative technology in relevant scientific area.
